1. Overview & Core Philosophy

Browser Backup ("we", "our", or "the Extension") is designed with a strict privacy-first philosophy. We believe that your browsing history and personal bookmarks are sensitive, personal data that belong solely to you. Everything within Browser Backup runs 100% locally on your computer.

2. What Data We Collect & Process

Browsing History & Bookmarks: When you perform an export, restore, deduplication scan, or automatic backup, the extension interacts directly with Chrome's or Edge's native local APIs (chrome.history and chrome.bookmarks). This data is processed in memory on your computer and saved directly to your local file system (e.g. your Downloads/ folder). This data is never transmitted to our servers, third parties, or any external cloud services.

License Verification (Pro Users Only): When a user purchases a Pro license, our payment processor (Lemon Squeezy) issues a license key. To activate Pro features, the extension sends a POST request to Lemon Squeezy's secure licensing API (https://api.lemonsqueezy.com/v1/licenses) containing only:

The license key entered by the user.
The email address associated with the purchase.
A randomized anonymous device identifier (e.g., Chrome - Windows).

No browsing data, history URLs, or bookmarks are ever included in this request.

3. Permissions Usage

The permissions requested by Browser Backup are strictly used for functional utility:

history: To export your history to files and re-add URLs during restore.
bookmarks: To backup, restore, deduplicate, and check broken bookmarks.
downloads: To save backup archives directly to your computer.
storage: To save your local preferences (intervals, retention count) and license status.
alarms: To schedule periodic local automatic backups.
sidePanel: To render the interface cleanly within your browser.
offscreen: To generate download Blob URLs within Manifest V3.
*://*/* (optional): Used strictly on-demand when clicking "Check bookmark links" to verify if bookmarked sites return HTTP 404.

4. Analytics & Third Parties

We do not use Google Analytics, cookies, tracker pixels, advertising SDKs, or telemetry within the extension or on our website.
